Modern Hair Transplantation and Its Popularity in the UK
By Daniel Vettori
Modern hair transplant uses a person's own existent hair that is immune to baldness to be restored to the receding areas of the scalp, this comprises of two methods: Follicular Unit Transplant and Follicular Unit Extraction which utilizes follicular units.
Now what is Follicular Units?
It is the basic anatomy of hair that understands that hair grows from bulbous shaped hair follicle which resides underneath the scalp and is responsible for the production and growth of the hair. These hair follicles are further packed in a grouping as visible through microscopic view which forms in 2, 3, 4 or 5hair follicles are closely situated as a unit which is referred as a follicular unit. So as to when harvesting the donor hair these it is extracted instead of the random hairs as it was in the outdated procedure. The follicular units are extracted from the skin strip with a little skin or fatty tissue to hold or bind the hair follicular unit together. The whole thing is now ready to be transplanted, and the hair follicle with a little bit of skin tissue is called a hair graft. This follicular unit transplant process has finally started to work and it is a huge business in the United Kingdom.
Before times there used to be only one way a hair transplant surgery could be done: strip harvesting. Strip harvesting involved surgically removing a linear skin strip from the back of the scalp of the patient with general anaesthesia, which means the patient is just put to sleep through the procedure and not feel a thing during surgery. The excised linear strip contained numerous hair follicles, hair follicles were randomly isolated from the skin strip with a punch that would be anything between 5-10 to even 12 hair grafts, which would look anything but natural from the look and feel of it, but once transplanted the hair would grow as usual.
Now the new follicular unit transplant or FUT hair transplant method also utilizes the strip harvesting but this time it uses local tumescent anaesthesia instead of general anaesthesia which prepares the treatable area with good rigidity and constricts the blood vessels lessenining the morbidity associated with the outdated strip harvesting. By means of FUT hair transplant the procedure is worthwhile as the maximum number of evened quality hair grafts can be obtained promising the best density achievable with a surgery. FUT hair transplant takes 4-7 hours a session which suffices to cover for a large transplantation.
FUE hair transplant procedure involves that each 2-5 hair follicular unit is to be plucked out individually, one by one from the donor zone/ back of the scalp with a little bit of fatty tissue but without the need of any skin excision, the complete procedure takes about 7-10hours for each session, which can need further sessions to get to the expected result.
